1977 Greco EG-700 Les Paul Standard Plain Maple Top Cherry Sunburst (MIJ Fujigen)
1977 Greco EG-700 Les Paul Standard Plain Maple Top Cherry Sunburst (MIJ Fujigen)
Crafted to the highest standard of Japanese guitar manufacturing in the Fujigen Factory in 1977, up for sale is a mid to high range catalog model of the EG series, the EG-700. Having a "700" notation means that this particular EG sports a high quality pancake mahogany body, 2 piece solid maple plain top with some stunning grain lines, fret nibs on the rosewood fingerboard and a host of other late 50s Gibson style features including an ABR-1 bridge, cream plastics and gold bell style control knobs. This guitar is an absolute Les Paul killer and is a great blend of original and tastefully replaced parts, including an aftermarket Seymour Duncan bridge pickup to add some extra oomph.
The 24.75" scale length neck is 5 piece maple veneered to perfection with a beautifully grained rosewood fingerboard bound with cream plastic binding and fret nibs in true Gibson 50s style. Original bone nut is in great shape and measures 44.5mm wide. The headstock also features the original geometric Greco embossed machine heads and Greco mother of pearl logo. The neck has fantastic playability up and down and feels excellent in the hands with the slim taper profile.
Electronics wise, pots, caps and jack socket are all original with the 3-way switch having been replaced in house with a quality Switchcraft replacement. The original Maxon neck pickup is present and the bridge pickup has been replaced to a '59 Seymour Duncan PAF pickup which replicates late 50s tones to a tee. The neck pickup is warm and thick with plenty of vintage tone on tap for dark, jazzy tones or thick doom and rhythm tones.
Professionally serviced top to bottom and professionally setup with 10-46s, the playability and tone of this guitar is exactly what you'd expect from Greco and as always, the guitar sounds incredible and plays beautifully. Condition wise, the guitar is in great condition for its 45+ year vintage with some dings and dents present, however all is honest wear and in keeping with the age of the instrument. Aside from some replaced screws, brass saddles and the afformentioned electronic replacements, the guitar is 100% original and ready to rock out for another 50 years. Comes with its original gig bag and original receipt!
